New York University’s Stern School of Business is heralded as one of the top business schools in the world, with the connections and productive environment it offers. Such a university should host a dean with a record just as stellar, and Raghu Sundaram fits perfectly.
His education stems from the University of Madras in India, where he got a bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1982. 2 years later, he earned an MBA in Operations at the Indian Institution of Management in Ahmedabad, India. He traveled to the USA in search of higher education, earning a Master’s degree in Economics at Cornell in 1987 and a Ph.D. in Economics the following year. He joined Stern’s staff in 1996 after teaching at the University of Rochester starting in 1988. Since then, he has done many positive things for Stern, both as a professor and as Dean.
He teaches many courses including Credit and Debt Markets, specializing in financially focused fields. Some examples are corporate finance, credit risk, and credit derivatives. His wide variety of classes taught Stern’s undergraduate program earned him the Stern’s Distinguished Teacher Award in 2007.
As the Dean, he has supervised Stern’s entry into virtual classes and made sure that the classes run smoothly and efficiently. He is responsible for building the school’s first Office of Diversity and Inclusion and has launched many new degree programs for Stern students to pursue.
Altogether, Mr. Sundaram has positively affected Stern in many ways by creating more diversity in the community and increasing productivity. From teaching many courses throughout Stern to overseeing their transition during the pandemic, he contributes to the many reasons why NYU Stern is one of the most renowned business schools in the world.
